Whiskey Bar’s Wednesday nights sound more appealing to me. I also tend to stand awkwardly in large crowds, forgetting what to do with my hands and losing any ability to focus on present company. I cannot stand wretched, cookie-cutter music and yelling for conversation. Maybe I have no business going out on weekends. “OK, we can leave,” I told my horrified brother. A separate room showcases a bar, DJ and dance floor, but few were groovin’ Saturday night. The small lounge in the back corner houses black leather seating, a pool table and plenty of mirrors. The main bar is a large island in the middle of the room, enveloped by well-dressed people standing shoulder-to-shoulder. I returned from the restroom safe haven and surveyed my surroundings. ![]() We each took advantage of the facilities, and I heard one young woman utter, clearly disgusted, “Didn’t she know there was a dress code?” I can only hope she wasn’t talking about me. The place was blaring typical dance music, and the bar was packed with lines a few people deep. Whiskey Bar was decked with spooky Halloween decorations, attempting to distract from the bar’s even spookier reality. The bouncer checked our IDs, and we were granted access. I worried about my idea, and my brother feared rejection at the door because we didn’t look the part. Taking on the role of supportive sibling, Paul agreed, and we approached the line of twenty- and thirty-somethings, all aptly dressed. “Do they even serve beer?” we pondered, amused by the thought of drinking a pint of whiskey. Walking back, we passed the deafening vibe of Milwaukee Street, continued along Cathedral Square, and that’s when it hit me: “Paul, Let’s go to Whiskey Bar!” I was excited and suggested that we just have a beer. My brother and I caught a show this weekend at the Pabst Theater.
